Greenfield Online Surveys
In a 1998 survey of web shoppers conducted by Greenfield Online for BBBOnLine, a large majority (84%) agreed that the recognition of companies on the Web by a reputable third party (such as the Better Business Bureau) would make them more confident about buying from companies they do not know. More than three-quarters (78%) report that they would shop more online if they could be assured a company is reputable.
Greenfield Online conducted another survey in the fall of 2001. The new survey showed that eighty-nine percent (89%) of Internet users say they would be "more confident" buying from a company with a BBBBOnLine Reliability Seal than from a company that does not display the seal. In addition, more than half of online consumers would be "extremely likely" or "very likely" to buy from a company they did not know if the company were a member of the BBB and carried the BBBOnLine Reliability Seal, or if the company carried the BBBOnLine Privacy Seal.
Money magazine, November 1998
Money magazine reviewed online Seals of Assurance and named BBBOnLine "the gold standard", saying "We did some clicking around to check out the more prominent trustmarks, and our view is that the Better Business Bureau's is the gold standard. To qualify, a retailer must, among other things, become a BBB member, provide detailed management information and agree to binding arbitration."
